3. (5 points) Please draw a simple diagram to illustrate the differences between repair by synthesis-dependent strand annealing and repair by single-strand annealing. Use no more than a few words where necessary to explain your diagram.
I've "cheated" here by using the picture from our web site, which is nice and neat. You all had to draw the picture, but most of you did a very good job. Some of you forgot to include the 5' to 3' resection, which is an important part of both pathways.
A subset of students forgot that SDSA and SSA are pathways for repair of double-strand breaks. This subset thought that SDSA and SSA are alternative pathways for damage bypass, which is incorrect. The word "repair" in the question should have warned you that damage bypass would not be a correct answer, because damage is not repaired during damage bypass.
