Answer to Question 4 from November, 1999

4. List the bacterial proteins known to be required for nucleotide excision repair. Using no more than 10 words per protein (hopefully only one or two words), describe what is known about the function of each of these proteins. (4 points)

 

I'm afraid I was somewhat unrealistic in terms of the number of words required to summarize what is known about the function of each of these proteins, but note that in the following answer no more than 7 words are used per protein:

 

UvrA-Assists UvrB in binding to damaged regions

UvrB-Recognizes damage; nicks 3' to damage

UvrC-Nicks 5' to damage

UvrD-Helicase that unwinds the damage-containing oligonucleotide

Polymerase I or II-Fills in the resulting gap

Ligase-Seals the final nick
